The Royal Swing Orchestra

The Royal Swing Orchestra present an afternoon of tunes from an era when Swing was King. As a repertory orchestra, the ensemble presents a concert of musical tributes to all of the famous big bands of the Swing Era and their leaders.

When Swing Was King features the sounds of the Big Band Era and provides a journey back to the 1930’s, 1940’s and 1950’s -- the heady days of youth for many patrons of the community concert series. It is a wholesome, fun program that brings comfort, awakens memories, and lifts the spirits.† The Royal Swing Orchestra will play some of the very best music produced during the swing era, interspersed with entertaining commentary, and give an opportunity for reflection, conversation and the development of new friendships.

Throughout the afternoon the Royal Swing Orchestra will feature authentic selections from the libraries of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, and other such luminaries of the big band era. For other occasions the group also provides great Swing music in a dance format, as well as integrating music from the 50's through the 90's.

Musical director, Dick Lowenthal, is a nationally known Jazz Educator, Clinician, and founder of the New Jersey Jazz Repertory Orchestra. He is also the conductor of special engagements of the Glenn Miller Orchestra, appearing in Poland, Japan, the Philippines, and South America. For the past thirty years, Dick has been researching, conducting, and producing these musical tributes of many diverse styles. The concert program includes many of the recognizable hits and other musical selections that have made these bandleaders legendary over the past half-century.
